Fewer Florida State Troopers on the road to keep you safe

FHP has lost half it's work force since 2010

The numbers prove there's a big problem getting worse on Florida highways.

The number of Florida Highway Patrol Troopers are decreasing, but the number of accidents are going up.

In fact, there were 170,000 more crashes reported in 2016 compared to 2011.

Meanwhile, the number of speeding tickets issued is on a steady decline. In 2011, FHP issued 317,000 speeding citations.  That's compared to 258,000 in 2016.  That's a 19 percent drop.

But the underlying problem is all about money.

Florida has one of the lowest trooper salaries in the nation, starting at $34,000.

State lawmakers passed an $82 billion budget which included a five percent raise for troopers.
