Hepatitis A is a highly contagious disease that attacks the liver. Infected people are most contagious during a period two weeks before symptoms appear to one week afterwards.

Symptoms usually start within 28 days of exposure to the virus. Not everyone will show all of the following symptoms:

  • Jaundice (yellowing skin and whites of eyes)
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue/tired
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Dark-colored urine

The best way to prevent the spread of hepatitis A is through good hand hygiene. Make sure to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom or changing diapers.

People showing signs of hepatitis A symptoms should seek medical care immediately. No medicines can cure the disease once symptoms appear.
