NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- It’s one of the first cases of its kind in Tampa Bay.

A Lakeland man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for crashing his car and killing a teen while he was high on Spice.

“My baby Brooke. You killed her and left her for dead,” said Wendy Gonzalez in court Monday morning.

She is the mother of the victim, Brooke Gonzalez.

Holding a picture of Brooke, Wendy finally had a chance to face the man responsible for killing her.

“How can you live with yourself?” she aked.

After a plea deal, a Pasco County judge sentenced Scott Yutzy to 12 years in prison.

Investigators say he ran off State Road 52 in 2016, slammed into a guard rail and hit Brooke.

She was on the sidewalk just steps from her apartment in Hudson.

“We all get a life sentence. You get 12 years of food and a bed. Not right and not fair,” said Wendy.

The 19-year-old softball player was set to graduate from Pasco Hernando State College just eight days later.

And what really has her still looking for answers is the fact that Yutzy was in another crash just a few hours earlier.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Yutzy rear ended another car on the same night, on the same road.

FHP cited him with a ticket for careless driving.

“If they would have looked further in to this guy after the first incident, my daughter would have been alive today for this to be a non issue,” said Brooke’s father Luis Gonzalez.

Brooke’s family also wants laws changed to keep up with new drugs like Spice, so the penalties are tougher.

“He’s got 12 years and we’ve all got a life of pain and suffering to deal with,” said Luis.

After college. Brooke had plans to be a firefighter, EMT, or maybe a nurse.

She wanted to help others.

But she already meant so much to so many.

“Best daughter ever, sister, aunt, girlfriend, friend, athlete. See you in 12 years,” her mother said to Yutzy as she walked away.

The family also dug up some disturbing images of Yutzy on social media, including a video where he jokes with a young woman about running people over at a movie theater.

“Let’s start seeing if we can go through the ticket booth, taking out these two with them,” Yutzy said in the video.

The nickname on his Facebook page is Son Of Demons.

“What kind of person are you to advertise this kind of cruelty and then execute it and live with yourself. I don’t understand it,” said Brooke’s older brother Bryan.

Adding to this tragic case, Yutzy’s mother is also in prison for DUI manslaughter.

Audrey Yutzy is serving 10 years for for killing an 84-year-old woman in 2010.
