A Clearwater mother is expected to face charges after telling officers her young son was in the back of her vehicle when it was stolen, a story police say she later recanted.

The boy was found safe at a Pinellas Park daycare.

The search began after a Ford Fusion was stolen from Boylan Avenue.

Police tracked it down via GPS as it traveled at times in the wrong direction on U.S. 19. It crashed on U.S. 19 south of Curlew Road about 2:20 p.m.

The child's mother told police she left her child in the car, returned and found the car was gone along with the child. Police said she changed her story and that he was never in the back of the car.

The driver of the car was arrested. He is currently being questioned by police.
