TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Police officers want to warn drivers about a recent trend they have noticed in the city, regarding Hondas.
They said they have received 20 reports of airbags that were stolen out of cars -specifically Hondas.
“I can’t imagine somebody is acting alone (on) this,” Steve Hegarty said.
Hegarty is the Public Information Officer for the Tampa Police Department. He said the crimes occurred between March 15 - March 29 and during the day.
Police officers believe a well organized group targeted cars in two parking garages along West Boy Scout Road and the Fort Brook Garage downtown. Hegarty said, in most of the cases, the thieves were only after the airbag. Police suspect the crooks are reselling the airbags on the black market.
“These are safely parked in a parking garage. The cars were locked. They just very expertly popped the locks out, took the airbag, and moved on to the next,” Hegarty said.
If anyone has information on this case, call the Tampa Police Department.
