HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- The sheriff's office is launching a tool aimed at connecting directly with the large Hispanic population in Hillsborough County.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is starting social media pages in Spanish. They want to build their relationship with the Hispanic community and they believe this is one way to do that.

"We don't want our Hispanic community to be victims either," Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

Sheriff Chronister said 33 percent of Hillsborough County is Hispanic. He does not want anyone shying away from reporting crimes for any reason.

"I'm 100 percent committed to having a workforce that reflects the diverse community that we serve," Sheriff Chronister said.

He said he wants to build relationships one person at a time.

"The biggest plus that comes out of building a relationship is trust," Sheriff Chronister said.

If someone's immigration status is stopping them from talking with deputies, the sheriff said it should not.

"Your legality status is irrelevant. Come forward and we'll make sure the community knows that. You're not going to be easy prey and you're not going to be an easy target," Sheriff Chronister said.

While the sheriff's office is launching new Spanish social media pages, they are keeping their current social media pages. They hope to launch the new Spanish social media pages in the next 30 days.
