Chaotic construction: Parts of Tampa turning into a maze of orange barrels and road blocks

The heart of South Tampa is undergoing open heart surgery.

Crews at work in the trenches, carving up "Bayshore Beautiful."

Much of the work is happening on South MacDill Ave, just north of Gandy. The City of Tampa is laying down water lines and the work continues street after street after street.

The invasion of work crews has residents seeing orange!

"It can be a real pain," says Sydney Shires. She tells her friends, "Pick your poison...There's trouble all around, but MacDill has been the worse."

Rolling through these South Tampa streets is a little like going through a maze, you never know when you're going to hit a dead end.

And it's not just water lines. Shires says, "Teco is doing a lot of work as well.. that's another added bonus... They're trimming all the trees."

It's a lot to dump on commuters at one time, but the city says the work will be finished in February.

Until then Shires admits it's a first world problem. "What has been the biggest challenge for you," we ask.

"Deciding whether i should go on Bayshore or MacDill to get out of here, " she says with a smile and laugh.
