HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. — The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office launched a new app to help them connect with their community.

Those who download the app will be able to do a variety of things including file crash reports, send tips to deputies, look up the most wanted list and search the sex offender registry of people who live in the county.

Scott Dressel, who works with the sheriff’s office, said there are Halloween festivities this weekend and he wants families to use the app in order to plan a safe route that night.

“It’s just another tool for us to communicate with people we serve (and) for them to communicate with us ‘cause it’s just not a one-way street,” Dressel said.

Shanajh Heath is an employee of Sebring Soda and Ice Cream Works. Heath saw that the sheriff’s office posted information about the app on their Facebook page today and she downloaded it immediately.

“I’m living here so I need to know what’s going on and the crime rate and everything like that,” Heath said.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office plans to release their own app tomorrow. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Petersburg Police Department and the Tampa Police Department have their own versions of an app that is aimed at connecting them with people who live in their communities.
