TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Police Department say two people are dead after a shooting on Nebraska Avenue in Tampa late Friday morning.

According to police, the shooting happened near Nebraska Avenue and 26th Avenue. Police got an alert that shots had been fired in the area around 10 a.m.

When police arrived at the location, they said they found community members trying to save the victims.

"We keep officers on patrol throughout, and immediately we jump into action. And that's certainly the case today, arriving here very quickly, immediately responding and performing CPR to them and doing everything that they could," said Jonee Lewis, Tampa PD Public Information Officer.

However, one man and one woman died from their injuries.

"We're talking with witnesses, we're working to identify video and get a good suspect description," Lewis said. "There was a small group of people and the two victims as well as the suspect. They were engaging with each other."

According to TPD, they have not identified a suspect. At this point, they do not think there is a threat to the community.

Johnathan Campbell lives near the crime scene. He says he was shocked to hear gunshots so early.

"I was outside, I was mowing my yard. And I hear like pop pop pop," he said. "Then it was like a three second pause into like three more shots. But some people were saying there's more than that. I kind of ignored I was like, yeah, kids, you know, firecrackers or some kind of loud sound like whatever it may be."

Campbell's neighbor called police, along with others in the neighborhood.

"I go to my spare window and I peek and I see EMT maybe for 10 minutes straight we're just resuscitating resuscitating and then I'm hearing or I'm seeing people like left and right like emotions people riled up," he added.

Campbell says its a sad day for this neighborhood.

"It's people destroying their own neighborhood," he said. "At what point do we just let our pride go? You know, people are prideful these days so much that you're going to shoot someone."

Nebraska Ave is closed between Plymouth and 26th Avenue while police investigate.
