Tampa firefighters are battling a 30-acre wildfire on the site of the former Georgetown Apartments off Westshore Boulevard and just north of Gandy Boulevard in South Tampa, Tampa police said.

A fire was reported in the 4800 block of West Fair Oaks Avenue near Dunmore Avenue west of  Westshore Boulevard at about 4:40 p.m. Friday.

Heavy smoke and flames are billowing above the vacant area covered in brush and trees.

Westshore Boulevard, which is east of the fire, is a heavily traveled thoroughfare with homes and businesses located north, south and east of the fire. Tampa Bay is located to the west of the fire.

No structures appear in danger at this time.

The property has remained vacant since the Georgetown Apartments were torn down.

The brush fire is active but contained with firefighters attacking many hot spots, Tampa police Lt. Ruth Cate said in a news release.
