According to several sources, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith has taken a coaching position at the University of Illinois.
Smith was fired as Buccaneers head coach after the 2015 season following an 8-24 record in his two seasons with the team. The statement from team sources called his performance a 'disappointment' despite the steady growth of young talent like Jameis Winston and Mike Evans.
Smith's Illini contract breakdown
- 6-year deal worth $2M in 2016-17
- $3M in 2018
- $4M in 2019
- $5M for 2020-21
