BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — The body of a dead baby was found in the ocean near the Florida coast on Friday, deputies say.

The female infant's body was discovered by an off-duty Boynton Beach firefighter while boating on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Boynton Beach Inlet, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say it is unclear how long the body had been in the water. They have also not been able to determine the age of the baby at this time.

The sheriff's office has dispatched detectives from the PBSO Special Victims Unit to investigate.

The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Statement from the Department of Children and Families:

The discovery of this little girl is awful. DCF has opened a child death investigation. At this time, very few details are known other than the manner in which she was found.
