Altamonte Springs will begin paying 20 percent of Uber bills on rides within city limits in a pilot project being called the first of its kind in the United States.

The city will pay even more of the bill – 25 percent – if the person uses the service to get to the area’s SunRail commuter rail line station, reports WFTV in Orlando.

The project aims to reduce congestion and improve SunRail ridership.

“People will not use SunRail unless it’s convenient to get to SunRail and to get to their homes, so this takes them door to door,” Congressman John Mica told the station.

Uber is promising to do background checks on drivers to ensure their safety, according to WFTV.

Altamonte Springs will test out the program for a year and, if successful, will accept bids from other companies.
