The Florida Department of Education released its 2019 school grades for 2019.

The department says school grades provide an easily understandable way to measure the performance of a school. Schools are graded on an A, B, C, D or F scale.

The school grading system focuses on student success measures like achievement, learning gains, graduation, acceleration success and maintaining a focus on students who need the most support.

Only 7 schools in the Tampa Bay area received F grades. Those are Lakewood Elementary, James Elementary, Oakpark Elementary, Kimbell Elementary, Foster Elementary, Caminiti Exceptional Center and Excelsior Prep Charter School. Lakewood, James, Oakpark and Kimbell also received F grades in 2018.

However, 77% of the schools with a D or F grade in 2018 improved their grade in 2019. One F school in 2018 even improved to an A this year.

As far as district grades, every Tampa Bay area district received a B average with the exception of Sarasota, which had an A.
