Tampa police swarmed the 2100 block of Flora Street after receiving a 911 call that a woman was injured in the road.

At first, first responders thought she’d been hit by a car.  But, when they arrived on scene they found head injuries that weren’t accidental.

“You’d never expect to see a body at 330 in the afternoon just laying in the middle of the street,” Dillon Gonzalez said. Gonzalez lives four houses down from where the woman’s body was dropped off. He said investigators came to his home asking questions about what his family saw.

Gonzalez says the detective told him the woman had been shot in the head.

“It is very concerning to live in this neighborhood I've lived here 22 years but I've never seen anything this serious,” Gonzalez said. “Hopefully, they end up finding who did it.”

The victim was identified late Thursday night as Latoya D. Smith, 30.

Investigators are still searching for a suspect, but said they are following promising leads in the case and it does not appear to be random.
