TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Police are investigating the drowning of a 4-year-old boy with autism.

Tampa Police responded to the Clipper Bay apartments on South Lois Avenue around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They received a 911 call about the missing 4-year-old.

Police say that the child's mother, April Sikes, had laid down for a nap. During that time, her son, David, was reportedly able to manipulate the door and exit the residence.

Police say that Sikes called 911 after searching for David and being unable to locate him. Officers arrived and immediately began a search. Officers located David in a pond near the residence at 2:59 p.m.

"Tragically, they were unable to revive David," Tampa PD wrote in a press release.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
