Tampa police are investigating an officer involved shooting.  It happened in the area of Florida Avenue and Ida Street Saturday night, Sept. 10.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on a Toyota Corolla with a missing headlight at about 9:30 p.m. Responding officers determined that the vehicle was stolen.

The driver, Joel Cook, fled the traffic stop and crashed into a tree on Floribraska Avenue and Tampa Street.  The responding officer attempted to make contact with Cook. He put the car in reverse and backed onto the hood of the patrol cruiser.  Officers shot at the suspect.

He was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It was Cook's most recent brush with the law in the past two weeks. Cook was released Sept. 1 from the Hillsborough County Jail for time served on a grand theft motor vehicle charge.
