Health advisories in place at three Hillsborough beaches for bacteria levels

TAMPA, Fla. — There are health advisories is in place at Ben T Davis, Picnic Island and Simmonds Park beaches over a potential bacteria risk. 

The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County said samples taken Wednesday were above the threshold for enterococci bacteria.  

The advisory will be lifted when re-sampling shows the water is within satisfactory range. The Department of Health says they will re-sample Wednesday, August 15.

Enterococci bacteria can usually found in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals, according to the health department. In high concentrations, it can cause human diseases, infections or rashes. It can be an indication of fecal pollution from stormwater runoff, pets, wildlife and human sewage.
