HART bus & cement mixer crash in Ybor City, bus passengers suffer minor injuries

Nine HART bus passengers were injured Friday morning when the bus they were riding on collided with a cement mixer at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 21st Street in Ybor City. 

Police say at approximately 6:05 a.m. on Friday a Preferred Materials cement mixer was traveling southbound on 21st Street and failed to stop at a red light on 7th Avenue, resulting in a collision with a HARTline bus traveling westbound on 7th Avenue. The collision caused the cement truck to overturn. 

There were 21 passengers on the bus at the time of the crash, nine were transported to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries. Both the driver of the truck and the bus were treated at the scene for minor injuries. 

Traffic was rerouted for approximately 2 and a half hours on Friday. There was approximately $20,000 in damage to both the bus and the cement mixer. A $2,000 light pole was knocked over and a $500 bike attached to the bike rack on the bus, was destroyed. 

The driver of the cement truck was charged with running a red light. 

The scene was cleared and the cement mixer was removed from the roadway shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday.
