ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — Pinellas County detectives are conducting a death investigation involving a former Mayor of St. Pete Beach.

Deputies say that former Mayor Stephen Douglas McFarlin, 63, was found deceased inside the private residence of his St. Pete Beach home around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to detectives, family members became concerned about McFarlin's welfare after a lapse of time in communication.

Family members went to his home on Gulf Boulevard and found him deceased inside. Family members immediately called deputies who responded to the home and confirmed that McFarlin was deceased.

Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are conducting a death investigation but say it appears that he died of a self-inflicted injury and that his death does not appear to be suspicious.

McFarlin served as Mayor of St. Pete Beach from 2011 to 2014.
