SARASOTA, Fla. -- A woman wielding a knife has been shot and killed by a deputy in Sarasota Sunday night.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a battery in the 4000 block of Dyer Lane around 5 p.m. As deputies made their way to the scene, the suspect had run off with a knife.

Deputies eventually found the suspect near the intersection of Dyer Lane and Corey Road. The suspect, later identified as 63-year-old Adrean Stephenson, began "brandishing a knife" and deputies made verbal commands for Stephenson to drop the knife, according to the sheriff's office.

Stephenson then "continued to advance" toward the deputies and a deputy on scene tried to use a Taser but was ineffective, the sheriff's office said. Stephenson continued to ignore deputies' commands and a second deputy shot the suspect, killing her on scene.

Officials have not identified the deputy who opened fire.
