A sixteen acre piece of land near the Sarasota Celery Fields is causing a lot of controversy.
Businessman Jim Gabbert is hoping to get county approval to place a recycle facility near the wetlands.
About a hundred residents showed up to Wednesday’s commission meeting to voice concern.
“I think it is vital that we protect the area, because people from all over the world come here,” said protestor Christine Hoffman.
Many of those opposing the project fear increased pollution, traffic, and noise.
Gabbert said his facility would have no impact on the Celery Fields. He said the company is providing a buffer between the recycling facility and the wetlands.
“We’ve always using each best management practices,” said Gabbert.
Commissioners plan to vote on the issue by the end of Wednesday evening.
