UPDATE: The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office reports that all lanes of Fruitville Road east of I-75 to Coburn Road have been reopened. Due to heavy traffic, afternoon commuters are still encouraged to seek alternate routes and use detours when possible.

Additionally, in the next 3-4 hours, drivers can expect all east and westbound lanes to close down again so that the power lines can be reconnected. Officials tell us the re-connecting should take less than an hour.

The single occupant was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

ORIGINAL STORY: Sarasota County Sheriff's office deputies are on scene of a single-vehicle traffic crash that caused a power line to fall and take up both east and westbound lanes of Fruitville Road just east of I-75.

The involved vehicle did catch fire but luckily the single occupant made it to safety without injury, according to police.

At this time, all lanes of traffic in both directions have been stopped and are being rerouted.

The I-75 northbound off-ramp going east on Fruitville has also been shut down causing commuters to be redirected westbound on Fruitville Road.

FPL Connect is en route. Police are asking to please AVOID the area, seek alternate routes and SHARE this info as rush hour approaches.
