SARASOTA, Fla. — A Booker High School student, who was seriously injured two days before the end of the school year, is getting help from her classmates.

Isabella Smith was working on a routine dance when someone accidentally kicked her in the head. She suffered a serious head injury, bleeding internally. Smith had emergency surgery.

“We had to lay her down and after a bit, she decided she wasn’t fine,” Morgan Campbell said.

Campbell was present when Isabella was injured during dance class. The girls have been friends for three years.

“For something that traumatic to happen, it kind of puts life into perspective,” Campbell said.

Smith’s friends spent the next two weeks of summer organizing a fundraiser to help pay her medical bills.

“It was just such a freak accident and it’s a one in a million chance that this would happen,” Emma Johnson said.

Johnson is also friends with Smith. The benefit concert is Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Music Compound in Sarasota.

“I’m just excited to gather together and really show her how much we care for her and her family,” Johnson said.

The event showcases Smith’s passion for musical theater.

“You can just tell like her love for the art and you can just feel it,” Campbell said.

Johnson said her friend is expected to recover. She called her a survivor.

“Out of something really, really bad it can actually bring people together,” Campbell said.
