Two people suffered minor injuries early Sunday when an elderly man lost control of his vehicle and struck an apartment building in Sarasota.

Per a Florida Highway Patrol report Edward Dion, 70, was attempting to make a turn into the Springs at Bee Ridge complex off Wilkinson Rd. at approximately 7:30 AM when his 2014 Subaru Forester began to accelerate.

Dion told investigators that he attempted to stop the SUV by hitting the brakes but he said the vehicle would not stop.

It veered off the roadway striking a fence, an air conditioning unit and several pillars connected to one of the complex’s building located at 5910 Wilkinson. The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Arlene Watson was sleeping in her bed in the damaged building and suffered minor injuries when she was struck by falling debris. The 50-year-old woman was treated at the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation and so far, no charges have been filed.
