At 12:39 a.m. Saturday, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call for a report of a disturbance at 255 N. Tamiami Trail in the Palm & Pines Mobile & RV Park in Nokomis.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the first deputy arrived on the scene minutes later and was directed to a common area within the trailer park. The deputy spotted a man, who was on top of a screaming woman. The woman was later identified as the suspect’s wife.

The deputy told officials the suspect, 65-year-old Mark Richard Coleman, did not comply to his commands to get off the woman. A witness to the incident grabbed the suspect and they began fighting.

During the struggle Coleman pointed the weapon toward the deputy who fired his weapon, striking Coleman.

Coleman died of his injuries from the single gunshot wound.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was placed on routine, paid administrative leave, pending the results of an internal investigation.

Coleman’s wife was treated for minor injuries and has since been released from an area hospital. No one else was injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
