Manatee County Schools had a breach in security last week affecting over 7,700 employees.
According to Mike Barber of Manatee County Schools, the IRS issued a warning there was a phishing email scam that impacted school districts across the country.
The email appeared to be from Superintendent Green and asked an employee in the payroll department to send all W-2 forms.
The district was not aware of the scam until Friday. The FBI, IRS and insurance company was contacted. The district is also putting an ID protection service into place so the insurance company is alerted if anything similar happens again.
The IRS had a representative at the district today to help with any issues of people filing fake W2s.
