A Florida man risked everything to save a bald eagle from the jaws of an alligator in Manatee County.

Justin Matthews posted pictures on Facebook of the eagle after it was pulled from a pond in Parrish.

Matthews wrote in the post, his friend David, who is undergoing chemotherapy, jumped into the water and pulled the eagle out of the gator's mouth.

Matthews talked about the rescue on The Now Tampa Bay on Friday.

He said, “Dave couldn't just watch a gator kill them emblem of the United States”

Unfortunately, the eagle had to be euthanized.

Matthews told The Now Tampa Bay, the gator will now be removed from the pond.

According to Matthews, the eagle and its mate had a nest on a cell phone tower near the pond.

Justin Matthews with Matthews Wildlife Rescue has been checking on the nest that the male eagle left behind. There is one eaglet in it and should be able to fly on its own in the coming month.
