Joel Canchola was placed in handcuffs then seated in the back seat of a Manatee County sheriff's patrol car late Saturday night.

But that was not enough to hold him.

When deputies went back to check on Canchola, they discovered he had escaped from the patrol car, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident began Saturday night on Fifth Street Court East when deputies responded to a traffic crash involving a driver and the passenger fleeing the scene.

Deputies located both people during an investigation. The identity of the driver of the crashed vehicle was not released.

During the investigation, it was determined Canchola was the passenger. He also was wanted for violation of probation for possession of controlled substance and resisting arrest without violence.

Canchola turned himself in on Monday.  He's charged with escape and giving false information to law enforcement.
