Fred and Sylvia Meyer have lived in the Lakewood Country Club area for twenty years.
"It's beautiful and safe we've never had a problem, said Meyer.
Monday evening the couple discovered thousands of dollars worth of jewelry was taken from Sylvia's jewelry box. Investigators said there was no forced entry into the home.
"We go out walking the dogs all the time and don't even think to lock the doors," said Meyer.
Manatee County investigators were in the neighborhood Tuesday afternoon looking for clues.
The Meyer family said this incident changes the way they view their safety and security.
"I think we get a little bit comfortable we put our security alarm on during certain times, now we realize we can't walk across the street without putting it on," said Meyer.
Deputies said the investigation continues.
