NORTH PORT, Fla. — Detectives are investigating after a police officer allegedly accidentally shot himself in North Port, police say.
According to North Port Police, just before 6:30 p.m. on Monday, police and fire personnel responded to a call of a shooting at the Morgan Family Community Center. When they arrived, they found that only one person was involved and that the incident was accidental in nature.
Detectives and crime scene personnel are investigating.
Police say that the 25-year-old is a police officer for the Sarasota Police Department. According to SPD, the officer was not in uniform at the time of the accidental shooting.
"Officers with the Sarasota Police Department are working with the North Port Police Department to investigate this shooting. There will be an in-depth review of this incident to ensure all policies and procedures were followed," SPD wrote in a press release.
The police officer involved was taken to a local hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
