Manatee County Commissioner voted 7-0 to allow developers of Aqua by the Bay to go ahead with their plans.  The mega complex near 75th St. will have 2,800 residential units and retail space.

Developers said they are working with “world class” architects on the projects.  The don’t foresee any environmental impact on the nearby mangroves, but environmentalists have their reservations.

“Once those towers go up the birds will take a hike and they’ll be gone just like that,” said environmentalist Andy Mele.

Mele is part of a group called Suncoast Waterkeepers. The group has been protesting the site for more than a year.

“This is the last 2.5 miles of shoreline with pristine mangroves,” said Mele.

Mele said the group might sue to keep construction from beginning on the property.

"We are having meetings within the next couple of days, it's not over till it's over," said Mele.
