LAKELAND, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly hit-and-run in Lakeland.

Officials said the incident happened on Reynolds Road between the intersections of Main Street East and Barrington Ave.

The 44-year-old victim left her home Friday night walking to the Reynolds Road Food Mart close to her home.

Officials said when she was leaving the food mart around 9 p.m., she never made it back home.

The Emergency Communications Center received a report of a possible body in the ditch on Reynolds Road Saturday morning.

When deputies arrived on the scene, the victim was found in a ditch on the east side of Reynolds Road. Officials said she was wearing dark clothing.

Based on the evidence, deputies believe the victim was walking with the flow of traffic when she was struck from behind by an older model SUV or pickup truck.

The vehicle did not stop following the crash.

The sheriff's office said on Monday afternoon they located a possible vehicle involved and the owner is cooperating. No other information was released.

If anyone has any information on the incident, call Detective Walsh at (836) 297-1100.
