Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting at the Royal Inn in Winter Haven Wednesday morning.

At approximately 5:18 a.m. 911 operators received a call about a person threatening suicide at 3525 Lake Alfred Road in Winter Haven. The person told the 911 operator that he had a loaded gun in his pocket, according to a press release.

When officers arrived on scene they approached the person and he reached into his pocket and pulled out the weapon and pointed it at the officers. Officers fired at the person and he was struck multiple times. Officers immediately began rendering first aid to the person who was then taken by ground to a local hospital. The police chief says the suspect was alive and talking to officers when he left the scene.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the police chief confirmed the man had recently lost his wife and he is depressed.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird will provide more information at a news conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
