Man killed after deadly hit-and-run in Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly hit-and-run on Saturday.

Polk County officials said a crash was reported at about 3:54 a.m. on US 17 and the intersection of Hammock Lake Drive in Fort Meade.

When deputies and Polk Fire Rescue arrived on the scene, they found a victim in the outside lane of southbound US 17.

Detectives said the victim was a Hispanic man around 60 years old.

The victim was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash, detectives said.

Based on the evidence, deputies believe the vehicle involved may be a commercial vehicle.

The vehicle did not stop following the crash.
