Is a name, just a name on Lake Horney?

City commissioners agreed Friday morning it will poll residents around Lake Horney in Lakeland to see if they want the name changed.

The issue came up last month when one resident on the lake petitioned the US Board of Geographic Places to try to get the lake changed to something that doesn't get a giggle every time they say it.

Another resident who used to live on Lake Horney Drive told ABC Action News she actually changed the orientation of her house during a remodel so she didn't have to tell people she lived on Lake Horney Drive.

"We live on Lake Hor-nay... it's Lake Hor-nay," she said she would tell people, pronouncing it wrong on purpose to avoid a red-faced moment.

The lake is named after a historic figure in the city, Julius Teague Horney, who helped develop the town in the 20's.
