KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office arrested a woman for driving without a license after they say she fatally hit a 13-year-old student early Wednesday morning.

Authorities say 25-year-old Micaela Coronel hit 13-year-old Mariana Perez Borroto while the student was biking to school around 7:50 a.m. on Homosassa Road.

Borroto was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital where she later died from her injuries. She was biking to Lake Marion Creek Middle School, where she was an eighth grader, when she was hit.

Johna Jozwiak, the principal of Lake Marion Creek Middle, released this statement:

"Our hearts are broken today. We are devastated by the loss of a very special member of our Lake Marion Creek Middle family. Mariana was a bright and sweet-natured girl who possessed a very polite and calm manner. She enjoyed studying history and loved spending her free time sketching in notebooks. We are devastated by this tragic news. Counselors are available at school for students and staff members. We have also rescheduled the rest of this week's Florida Standards Assessments testing to next week."

Coronel is from Argentina and in the county on a 'visitors pass,' according to the sheriff's office. She does not have a valid driver's license, the sheriff's office says.

Coronel told authorities condensation was covering 80% of the windshield on her Chrysler Town & Country minivan at the time of the accident.

The sheriff's office says other factors that may have contributed to the crash are being investigated. They are also checking with ICE to determine Coronel's status in the country.

"This suspect should not have even been behind the wheel of a vehicle," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "This is an awful, senseless tragedy that should never have occurred. This beautiful child should be turning 14 years old in just two weeks, but for this suspect's illegal actions. Mariana's family and friends are in our prayers."

Coronel was charged with operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license causing death, which is a third degree felony.
