ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A section of the Bayshore Drive in downtown St. Pete is closed to traffic in an effort to help people social distance.

The sparkling water next to palm tree-lined Bayshore Drive brings people flocking to the area for exercise.

"I’m super excited about this because as a runner, walker and cyclist, we couldn’t be happier," said Lori Gagen.

Starting on Friday, 5th Ave. to 2nd Ave. along Bayshore Drive is closed to traffic so walkers and bikers can spread out on the road and safely social distance.

"Now we don’t have to worry so much about people being crowded on the sidewalks," said Cindy Foreman, who is visiting St. Pete.

The city says they’re experimenting with road closures to create more space for people.

"I don’t see it as a problem as someone who drives down here because rarely do I park in this area," said Gagen.

The city says this section will remain closed until further notice.
