St. Pete police searching for 'armed and dangerous' murder suspect

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Pete police are asking for the public's help locating a murder suspect.

Police said the shooting happened Tuesday, Feb. 3 just after midnight at the Emerald Pointe Apartments at 175 73rd Ave. North.

When police arrived, they found Darren Barnes, 31, dead inside an apartment and another man is recovering from serious injuries.

Detectives are investigating what led up to the shooting.

Police are looking for Cornelius "Cornbread" Whitfield, 31, as the suspect in the murder. He is 5' 6" tall and weighs 145 pounds.

He is considered armed and dangerous and was released from prison in November 2020, police said.

Police said detectives have reason to believe he is still in the St. Pete area.
