ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A local woman got a terrifying call this week -- saying her husband died in a car accident.

A Facebook post about the ordeal says the call came up as a bunch of zeros with the caller ID showing it as the St. Petersburg Police Department.

After several minutes of the caller comforting the woman, the post goes on to state that the caller then asked the woman to come down to the morgue to identify her husband.

The caller also apparently insisted the woman make a payment over the phone to speed up the process, so she would not have to wait in line.

The woman realized it was a scam, hung up the phone, and was able to reach her husband on his cell phone.

A spokesperson for the St. Petersburg Police Department told ABC Action News that they would never notify family members over the phone, they would do it in person, and would not ask for any payments over the phone.
