Florida woman arrested, charged after crashing into Pinellas County deputy vehicle

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Officials are investigating after a Pinellas County deputy was involved in a crash early Sunday morning. The crash occurred in Unincorporated St. Petersburg.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Denise Duran was on-duty and driving a full marked vehicle on eastbound 38th Avenue North. She was attempting to make a northbound turn onto 49th Street North.

Investigators say 32-year-old Leilani Smith was traveling westbound on 38th Avenue North in her vehicle approaching the 49th Street North intersection.

Deputies say the light was yellow for Deputy Duran and Smith. As Deputy Duran made a northbound turn, she went into the path of Smith, and the deputy's vehicle was hit on the passenger side.

Deputy Nazir Amin was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Deputy Duran and Smith were not injured.

During the investigation, Smith showed signs of impairment. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit testing.

Smith was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.
