PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- An elementary school teacher in Pinellas County is taking on a different role as the state continues to combat COVID-19.
Sgt. Fred Harmon teachers fifth grade Blanton Elementary School. But right now, he's serving as a Sgt. in the Florida National Guard.
Sgt. Harman was called to duty on March 24 to assist with efforts in West Palm Beach.
He was packing up his classroom to prepare for virtual learning when he got the call to serve.
"I have a passion for helping people and figuring out who they are, figuring out what's best for them. I taught as a non-commissioned officer in the Army. I teach people all the time and I think it transitioned really well to my passion for helping kids," says Sgt. Harmon when asked about this love of teaching.
Sgt. Harmon calls his wife "Supermom" though. She's also a teacher at a Pinellas County elementary school. She's teaching virtually and taking care of their toddler daughter.
The Florida National Guard is highlighting their heroes in a series called "Faces of the Fight" on Facebook. Click here to read their post on Sgt. Harmon.
