Deputies investigating drowning of 87-year-old man in St. Pete Beach

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- Deputies are investigating the drowning of an 87-year-old man Wednesday night.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office responded to a drowning call in the waterway behind a private residential area in the 3600 block of Belle Vista Drive East in St. Pete Beach. Upon arrival, deputies were told Robert Schmedes and his wife were out for a daily swim.

Schmedes' wife told deputies Robert Schmedes appeared in distressed and submerged in water. His wife swam to Robert Schmedes but struggled to hold his head above water before emergency crews arrived to pull Robert Schmedes out of the water, deputies said.

Schmedes was pronounced dead at the hospital. Deputies said his death does not appear suspicious.
