PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Timber Oaks and Bear Creek neighbors are breathing a sigh of relief now that Pasco County Commissioners shot down plans to build an apartment complex near their communities.

"The county has been listening to us," Rick Agler, the Vice President of the Timber Creek Community Association, said. "We're very grateful for that."

The complex would have gone on the 12-acre property at State Road 52 and La Madera Blvd. It sits between the two communities.

Agler and nearly 30 others from Timber Oaks and Bear Creek fought against the developer's plans from the very beginning, arguing that a low-income apartment complex could increase traffic and crime in the area.

"That going in there... is no benefit to Timber Oaks," Agler said. "There's some detriment."

Agler said some also had a problem with fact that apartments would bring more kids to their quiet retirement community.

"We love it here," he said.

Commissioners asked the developer to consider building another 55 and older community. He didn't seem to like that idea, and commissioners ended up voting against the proposal altogether.
