NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A Pasco County homeowner is stuck cleaning his home after a thunderstorm destroyed the roof.
Mena Mekhail said he lost most of his belongings including furniture and clothing.
Last week, heavy rain and wind tore off the roof of his home.
"That day was crazy when I came in, I didn't know where to start, but now it has been a week," said Mena Mekhail.
He estimates the damage is somewhere between $30K to $40K. He did not have insurance, so he is relying on help from others.
"The community has been wrapped around me pretty well and all my friends and family they’ve been great and they’ve been offering me all types of help, that's huge," said Mekhail.
He has several tarps on the roof but said the afternoon thunderstorms continue to damage the inside of his home.
"The rain went through the tarp, tore the tarp apart and I came last night and the house was drenched in water again. We had to go back up there. My friends were able to get up there and tarp it all over again," said Mekhail.
Mekhail has removed most of his belongings from the home. He hopes to make repairs so his family can live in the house again. Mekhail and his wife are expecting a baby in January.
"It's going to be some time before I can get this house back together and get my family back in it, but we're working on it," he said.
