HUDSON, Fla. — A man in Pasco County is facing charges for having a gun illegally after he shot himself in the leg while playing cowboy, according to the sheriff's office.

Matthew Noffsinger Jr., 36, was arrested on Friday after Pasco County Deputies visited him in the hospital. He was being treated for the gunshot wound.

Noffsinger told deputies he was shot while in the woods by an unknown person, according to an arrest report. Deputies say the entrance and exit wound on his leg didn't match with the story.

Noffsinger eventually told deputies he lied because he knew he wasn't supposed to have a gun. He said he was playing cowboy with a .22 revolver when it accidentally went off, the report says.

Noffsinger was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was taken to the Land O' Lakes Detention Center without incident.
