LAND O' LAKES, Fla. — Since we went behind Jeff Cole’s home more than a year ago, he says things have only gotten worse.
“I heard the house pop and crack. Typically it’s floor tiles, basically, you hear it at night and you don’t know what’s going on.”
Cole says the foundation of his Land O’ Lakes home is in trouble because of erosion where a canal runs through the Plantation Palms subdivision.
“You can see the storm water down here, home much it’s gone up in just a few minutes we’ve been sitting around.”
A Pasco County engineer was checking out the ditch Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, there are pending lawsuits between residents, the HOA, and the county.
But the HOA’s attorney says a settlement with the county could be close.
That settlement would involve an assessment for those in this subdivision to pay for repairs to the ditch and drainage easement.
But Cole says people here shouldn’t be on the hook to pay for what he calls flaws with the design and infrastructure.
The HOA says they will reduce dues in the future to help offset the cost.
But what that cost remains to be seen.
They also say engineers have studied the area and found no imminent danger.
That doesn’t make Jeff feel any better.
“You know the canal is 36 feet deep and my house is very close to it, so it’s a little unsettling.”
