WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. — A 79-year-old died in a wrong-way crash in Pasco County Thursday morning.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 79-year-old man was driving his SUV in the eastbound lanes of SR-54, approaching Foxwood Boulevard, when he lost control, entered the outside shoulder and collided with several construction barrels.
After striking the construction barrels, the SUV driver got back on the highway and struck a van nearly head-on.
Pasco Fire Rescue had to pull one of the individuals out of the crash.
FHP said the 70-year-old driver of the van and his two passengers were seriously injured. The SUV driver died on the scene from his injuries.
Parts of the roadway were closed due to the crash, but have since reopened.
FHP said it is unknown what caused the SUV driver to lose control.
