PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Third grade students in the Tampa Bay area are looking out for other third-graders who are struggling after Hurricane Michael.

Compassion for others is the lesson being taught in Stephanie Bearkland’s classroom at Highland Lakes Elementary School in Palm Harbor.

Her students are sending love and supplies to kids in devastated Bay County. The storm victims were displaced to schools in nearby Walton County.

“We were talking about it, and what it would be like if it were us,” says Bearkland. “Kids can make a big difference.”

Bearkland’s students are sending letters full of hopeful messages to kids up north.

Charlotte Albert’s letter starts like this:

“Dear Friend, I hope you are well. I know it has been rough for you. I care about you…”

The class is also sending supplies including water, school supplies and backpacks to the Panhandle.

They would love for you to help out. Bearkland and her third-graders started an Amazon page where you can buy items for the displaced students.
