A woman foiled a carjacking attempt early Monday morning by driving in reverse, according to the Largo Police Department.

Police say just before 1 a.m. a woman was in her car in the Farrington Apartments at 2738 Roosevelt Boulevard in Largo.

Officers say a man approached the car with a shirt wrapped around his head and demanded the car and money at gunpoint.

The woman immediately put the car into reverse and took off.

Police say the man fired at least one shot at the car. One bullet hit the driver's side door just below the window.

The woman drove to a nearby Speedway gas station where she called 911.

“I heard the gunshot,” Beth Radcliffe said. “I was scared like, oh my God. He had a teal T-shirt from here up wrapped around his face. I heard him laughing when he jumped over the fence. I guess he has no brain.”

“We always have our doors locked non-stop,” Radcliffe said.  “Stay inside. Be careful. I suggest everyone around here be careful keep your doors locked.”

The suspect remains at large. No one was hurt in the attempted carjacking.
